What are the benefits of this course?
Point reduction applies to points occurring within 18 months immediately before course completion. It does not affect points for earlier violations, and can't be used for future points.
Point reduction cannot reduce your point total lower than zero. If you have four or fewer points at the time you complete the course your point total will be reduced to zero.
If your license is already revoked or suspended, or if a violation point hearing has already been scheduled, point reduction will not affect that action.
Point reduction does not prevent or cancel mandatory suspensions or revocations for violations such as DWI or three speeding violations in 18 months.
Points may be reduced once in an 18-month period. However, if a driver receives a ticket after completing the Defensive Driving Course, but did not have any accrued points being held against his/her license prior to taking the course, he/she will be eligible for point reduction immediately rather than having to wait 18 months from their completion date.
DMV and insurance company point systems are separate and unrelated.
